One morning in Baghdad changes a young girl's life forever.

Seven-year-old Marta wakes to find her mother dead and her father on the run. Falsely accused of selling US contraband to Al-Qaeda, Paul Highland takes his daughter Marta off to Egypt. To avoid detection by a government agent, the pair of fugitives travels from the Middle East to Africa and then to South America.

Finally settling down in one place with her father, teenage Marta searches for her own identity and how that identity is bound up in her mother's. Then Marta's faith is tested as her father is accused of treason, she is held hostage for information, and they work to clear her father's name.
